IN PARABOLA is a duo exhibition with works by Spanish artist Lucía Simón Medina and Julius Stahl from Berlin, that will be opened in a Sunday matinee at the beginning of Berlin Art Week. The exhibition will juxtapose Lucía’s major work The name on the tip of the tongue , that highlights cryptography and numbers as basic aspects of contemporary life, with new luminographic works and a sound based kinetic sculpture of Julius.
IN A FIGURATIVE SENSE – the metaphorical meaning of the exhibition’s title – the two artists make ubiquitous but non-conscious, and thus generally just scientifically explainable natural phenomena visible, give them an artistic form and, as a consequence of their content-oriented concepts, enable a new experience to the viewers.
Lucía Simón Medina’s [b. 1987, Santander/ES] artistic research focuses on the intersection between language, logic, mathematics, movement and musicality. On one hand, she attempts to analyse the transcription and the deconstruction from one discipline into another, and on the other, to investigate the moment before thoughts begin to be conceptualised into words. Her work includes audiovisual compositions and installations based on numbers notations. Recently her practice has been inspired by encryption systems based on prime numbers used on the internet.
Lucia Simón Medina has received numerous awards and scholarships, such as of the Academy of Arts, Berlin, artist-in-residence program KulturKontakt Austria, Vienna, Premio de Artes Plásticas, Gobierno de Cantabria, Santander or the sponsorship prize of ZC Goslar St Barbara „Women in Artistic Professions“.
Since 2017 she is a programme artist of drj – dr. julius | ap and will thus be represented in 2019 with The name on the tip of the tongue in the exhibition „Painted Diagrams“ of the Museum of Concrete Art Ingolstadt, as well as José Heerkens and Willem Besselink.
Julius Stahl [b. 1978, Witten/DE] came to visual arts through music: Beginning with the composition of electro-acoustic pieces for audio tape and loudspeaker and continuing through live electronic performances, he has increasingly expanded his artistic spectrum to include three-dimensional works and spatial installations. His engagement with sound and movement “… from physical movement to movement between the senses. Interferences in sensory spaces, between the visible and the audible, based on resonance …”, as he puts it, has led to a particular strain of pictorial work. In his work Julius Stahl draws on fundamental acoustic phenomena, in particular oscillations and sound waves, which we experience as tones, noise or simple resonances. Sound—often from the inaudible range—and the visualization of resonance itself are the major themes of his work. His work has been awarded many prizes and grants, most recently the 2015 DEW21 Kunstpreis of Dortmund. He has participated in important festivals like the Ars Electronica Linz and Transmediale Berlin, and his work has been shown in renowned museums like the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie [ZKM] in Karlsruhe.
Since 2013, Julius Stahl has been part of the dr. julius | ap artistic programme and had his first gallery exhibition here.
He will be on view in the exhibition „The Spiritual in Art“ at the Museum Concrete Art Ingolstadt from September 30, 2018.

IN PARABOLA ist eine Duo-Ausstellung mit Werken der spanischen Künstlerin Lucía Simón Medina und Julius Stahl aus Berlin, die mit einer Sonntagsmatinee am Beginn der Berlin Art Week eröffnet. Die Ausstellung stellt Lucías Großwerk The name on the tip of the tongue, welches Kryptographie und Zahlen als grundlegende Aspekte des zeitgenössischen Lebens beleuchtet, gemeinsam mit neuen luminographischen Arbeiten und einer Klang-basierten kinetischen Skulptur von Julius aus.
IM ÜBERTRAGENEN SINNE – der metaphorischen Bedeutung des Ausstellungstitels – machen die beiden Künstler allgegenwärtige, aber nicht bewusste und damit allgemein nur wissenschaftlich erklärbare Naturerscheinungen sichtbar, geben ihnen eine künstlerische Form und ermöglichen als Konsequenz ihrer inhaltlichen Konzepte den Betrachtern eine neue Erfahrung.
Lucía Simón Medinas [*1987 in Santander/ES] künstlerische Forschung zielt auf die Schnittstelle zwischen Sprache, Logik, Mathematik, Bewegung und Musikalität. Einerseits versucht sie, die Transkription und Dekonstruktion von einer Disziplin in die andere zu analysieren und auf der anderen Seite jenen Moment zu untersuchen, bevor Gedanken in Worte gefasst werden. Ihre Arbeit umfasst audiovisuelle Kompositionen und Installationen, die auf numerischen Notationen basieren.
Kürzlich wurde ihre Praxis von Verschlüsselungssystemen inspiriert, die auf Primzahlen basieren, die im Internet verwendet werden.
Lucia Simón Medina hat zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Stipendien erhalten, so etwa das Stipendium der Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Artist-in-Residence-Programm KulturKontakt Austria, Wien, Premio de Artes Plásticas, Gobierno de Cantabria, Santander oder den Förderpreis des ZC Goslar St. Barbara „Frauen in Künstlerischen Berufen“.
Seit 2017 ist sie Programmkünstlerin von drj – dr. julius | ap und wird so 2019 mit The name on the tip of the tongue in der Ausstellung „Gemalte Diagramme“ des Museum für Konkrete Kunst Ingolstadt vertreten sein, wie auch José Heerkens und Willem Besselink.
Julius Stahl [*1978 in Witten/DE] ist über die Musik zur Bildenden Kunst gekommen: Von der Komposition elektroakustischer Stücke für Tonband und Lautsprecher über Live-Elektronik Auftritte erweiterte er zunehmend sein künstlerisches Spektrum hin zu Objektkunst und räumlichen Installationen. Im Laufe seiner Auseinandersetzung mit den Themen Klang und Bewegung „…von physikalischer Bewegung zur Bewegung zwischen den Sinnen. Interferenzen von Sinnesräumen, zwischen Sicht- und Hörbarem, ausgehend von Resonation…“, wie er selbst schreibt, hat ein eigener Arbeitsstrang in die Gestaltung bildnerischer Werke geführt. Julius Stahl bezieht seine Arbeiten aus elementaren Phänomenen des Akustischen, nämlich Schwingungen und Schallwellen, die uns als Ton, Geräusch oder schlicht Resonation begegnen.
Klang, oft aus dem unhörbaren Bereich, und Resonation an sich sichtbar zu machen sind Hauptthemen seiner Werke. Seine Arbeiten wurden vielfach mit Preisen und Förderungen ausgezeichnet, zuletzt 2015 mit dem DEW21 Kunstpreis, Dortmund. Sie waren auf bedeutenden Festivals wie der Ars Electronica Linz oder der Transmediale Berlin und in renommierten Museen wie dem Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie [ZKM] Karlsruhe zu sehen.
Seit 2013 ist Julius Stahl Programmkünstler bei drj – dr. julius | ap und hatte hier seine erste Galerieausstellung.
Er wird ab 30. September 2018 in der Ausstellung „Das Geistige in der Kunst“ im Museum Konkrete Kunst Ingolstadt zu sehen sein.
