The 102nd exhibition at dr.julius art projects likewise combines both continuations and innovations. The first solo exhibition in Europe by Japanese artist Yasuaki Kuroda [*1986] continues and significantly advances his long-standing collaboration with drj; that in turn is an occasion for the artist to take a new step within his oeuvre.

And at the same time, this thematic focus is underscored by a special format: the exhibition is specifically refined by four artistic perspectives. Works by Haleh Redjaian [DE/IR], Esther Seidel [DE/IT], Maik Teriete [DE], and, for the first time, Joanna Mico [FR] focus on the essential basis of textile art—the thread.

With this special exhibition format, drj continues its thematic exploration of the textile in conceptual minimal art as an integral part of their programme.

Yasuaki Kuroda at present writes the following about his work: „Without a predetermined blueprint or design, the subject-object relationship between self and the thread continuously communicates on the loom, interchanging during the weaving process.
I do not hold the subjective authority over the thread; there are no one-sided, subject-object hierarchies that exists in the process of weaving. Woven into the textile is the imprint of myself, you, thread, silkworms, plants, soil, water, air, time, memory, and choice. It is the text as ‚us‘ a collective whole and we are not separated on the textile.“^[*1]

For COUNTERPOINT, the artist is now taking further new steps, not only intellectually, but also in the form of his work. Whereas his self-woven fabrics were previously mostly stretched on wooden panels, he has now created a first freely-hanging textile work to debut at the solo exhibition at drj. It reflects on the act of weaving itself and intertwines parts of the artist’s textiles from the last decade. It also highlights its significance within his concept- and theory-based background, as it marks both a continuation and an important innovation in his work. Furthermore, new works in smaller formats are also presented in a surprising way.


The aforementioned accompaniment to Kuroda’s artwork is being provided through the creations of Haleh Redjaian, Esther Seidel, Joanna Mico, and Maik Teriete.

In 2022, dr.julius art projects collaborated with frontviews to develop the major exhibition —t—e—x—t—i—l—e—, which was shown at two locations. Like Yasuaki Kuroda, the German-Iranian artist Haleh Redjaian, as well as Esther Seidel, who has lived in Italy for decades, have both exhibited serveral works there. Within the accompanying publication, the selected artists wrote down highly personal statements about their understanding of textiles. ^[*2] In COUNTERPOINT, both Redjaian and Seidel are featured with new works that use thread as an element to give space and visual impact in their own highly individual ways. While Esther Seidel, who has roots in a tradition of sculpture, has found her way into her enormously versatile work with fabrics, cloths, needles, and thread through the relationship between textiles and the human body, Haleh Redjaian uses the cultural dimensions and connections of traditional weaving as an essential basis for her works, contrasted with individual image creations through well-aimed interventions.

Maik Teriete, meanwhile, was part of the FutureShock OneTwo exhibition already back in 2012, a project that was fundamental to the programmatic endeavor of dr.julius art projects; and he has continued to be included in all important projects ever since. His contribution is part of a sculptural series of works consisting of acrylic glass bodies encircled with black threads, which brings the light-refracting and mirroring qualities of the core material into a contrasting unity with the threads. These works have lost none of their fascination over the years.

A new discovery, and appearing accordingly in the drj programme for the first time, are the works of French artist Joanna Mico. Through minimal interventions, she creates highly complex structures within the selected fabrics of various origins; and thus forms and inscribes subtle notations into them. The artistic technique she applies is the removal of specific components from the respective fabric, i.e. particular threads; as a consequence, her works are generated directly from within the material itself. Her personal background as a lyricist adds an additional, enriching dimension, connecting them in an abstract, rather philosophical sense with Yasuaki Kuroda’s textile-text-theory.

However, the continuation of topically-curated exhibitions featuring international positions in contemporary minimal conceptual art at dr.julius art projects is contrasted in COUNTERPOINT by an inevitable, unplanned alteration: for the first time in more than one hundred exhibitions, the protagonist will not be able to attend the opening in person. Unfortunately, the two artists from Italy and France will also be unable to head to Berlin. In their place, the works on display will be all the more intensely present. Presenting them to the visitors in the best possible way, both on this evening and throughout the entire exhibition, has always been the primary and essential intention of drj’s communication and mediation work.

Auch mit der 102. Ausstellung von dr.julius art projects sind sowohl Fortschreibungen als auch Neuerungen verbunden. So wird mit der ersten Einzelausstellung des japanischen Künstlers Yasuaki Kuroda [*1986] in Europa seine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit drj weitergeführt und deutlich vorangebracht; was für den Künstler wiederum Anlass für einen neuen Schritt innerhalb seines Werks ist.

Und zugleich wird dieser thematische Fokus durch ein weiterentwickeltes Format unterstrichen: Die Ausstellung wird gezielt präzisiert durch vier künstlerische Perspektiven. Werke von Haleh Redjaian [DE/IR], Esther Seidel [DE/IT], Maik Teriete [DE], sowie erstmals von Joanna Mico [FR] fokussieren gemeinsam auf die wesentliche Basis textiler Kunst — den Faden.

Mit diesem speziellen Ausstellungsformat setzt drj die thematische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Textilen in der konzeptuell minimalen Kunst fort, als festem Bestandteil der Programmarbeit.

Yasuaki Kuroda schreibt ganz aktuell zu seiner Arbeit etwa folgende Worte: “Ohne einen vorgegebenen Entwurf oder Plan kommuniziert die Subjekt-Objekt-Beziehung zwischen mir und dem Faden auf dem Webstuhl ständig miteinander und verändert sich während des Webprozesses. Ich habe keine subjektive Autorität über den Faden; es gibt keine einseitige Subjekt-Objekt-Hierarchie im Webprozess. In den Stoff eingewebt sind Spuren von mir, dir, dem Faden, den Seidenraupen, den Pflanzen, der Erde, dem Wasser, der Luft, der Zeit, der Erinnerung und der Entscheidung. Es ist so der Text als ‚wir‘, ein kollektives Ganzes, und wir sind auf dem Stoff nicht voneinander getrennt.” ^[*1]

Für COUNTERPOINT geht der Künstler nun nicht nur gedanklich, sondern zudem in der Ausformung seiner Arbeiten weitere, neue Schritte. Waren seine selbst-gewebten Stoffe bislang zumeist auf Holztafeln gespannt, so hat er für die Einzelausstellung bei drj nun erstmals ein als Textil frei hängendes Werk geschaffen. Es reflektiert das Weben selbst und verbindet verschiedenste dabei entstandene Stoffe des Künstlers aus der letzten Dekade miteinander. Auch dessen Bedeutung innerhalb seines konzept- und theoriebasierten Hintergrunds wird darin verdeutlicht. Dies markiert insofern eine weitere Fortschreibung, wie auch eine wichtige Innovation in seiner Arbeit. Des Weiteren sind neue Werke kleineren Formats in ebenfalls überraschender Form und Präsentationsweise gehalten.

Die erwähnte Begleitung und Präzisierung des Themas, über die Werke Kurodas hinaus, wird durch Arbeiten von Haleh Redjaian, Esther Seidel, Joanna Mico und Maik Teriete erreicht.

2022 hat dr.julius art projects in Zusammenarbeit mit frontviews die große Ausstellung —t—e—x—t—i—l—e— entwickelt und an zwei Standorten gezeigt. Wie auch Yasuaki Kuroda haben die deutsch-iranische Künstlerin Haleh Redjaian und die seit Jahrzehnten in Italien lebende Esther Seidel darin jeweils mehrere Werke ausgestellt. Zur begleitenden Publikation haben die ausgewählten Künstler:innen ihren persönlichen Ansatz zum künstlerischen Arbeiten in diesem Feld formuliert und dabei ebenso sehr persönliche Worte zu ihrem Verständnis des Textilen verfasst. ^[*2] In COUNTERPOINT sind beide mit neuen, dem Faden als Element jeweils sehr individuell Raum und Wirkung gebenden Werken vertreten. Während Esther Seidel, aus der Bildhauerei kommend, durch die Beziehung von Textilem und Körper einen Weg in ihre enorm vielseitige Arbeit mit Stoffen, Tüchern, Nadel und Faden gefunden hat, nutzt Haleh Redjaian die kulturellen Dimensionen und Verbindungen traditioneller Weberei im gegenüber einer individuellen Bildgestaltung über gezielte Interventionen in diese als eine wesentliche Grundlage für ihre Werke.

Maik Teriete wiederum war bereits 2012 an der für die programmatische Arbeit von dr.julius art projects sehr grundlegenden Ausstellung FutureShock OneTwo beteiligt, und seither stets in allen wichtigen Projekte vertreten. Sein Beitrag aus einer skulpturalen Werkgruppe, mit schwarzem Faden umfassten Acrylglaskörper, die das Licht brechende wie spiegelnden Eigenschaften des Kernmaterials in eine kontrastreiche Einheit mit dem Fadenmaterial bringen, hat über die Jahre nichts an ihrer Faszination eingebüßt.

Eine Neuentdeckung, und insofern erstmals im Programm von drj zu sehen, sind die Werke der französischen Künstlerin Joanna Mico. Durch minimale Eingriffe setzt sie gezielt Notationen in ausgewählte Stoffe unterschiedlicher Herkunft und schreibt so sehr komplexe wie subtile Strukturen in diese ein. Ihre künstlerische Technik ist dabei das Hinwegnehmen einzelner Bestandteile des jeweiligen Tuchs, das heißt von einzelnen Fäden; somit sind ihre Werke direkt aus dem Material an sich entwickelt. Ihr persönlicher Hintergrund als Lyrikerin verbindet sie ideell zudem mit der Textil-Text-Theorie von Yasuaki Kuroda, was eine zusätzliche, inhaltlich bereichernde Dimension ihrer Beiträge darstellt.

Der Fortschreibung thematisch achtsam kuratierter Ausstellungen mit internationalen Positionen der zeitgenössisch minimal konzeptuellen Kunst bei dr.julius art projects steht in COUNTERPOINT allerdings auch eine umständehalber nicht zu umgehende, ungeplante Neuerung gegenüber: Erstmals nach über einhundert Ausstellungen kann der Protagonist nicht persönlich an der Eröffnung teilnehmen. Und auch die beiden Künstlerinnen aus Italien und Frankreich werden leider nicht nach Berlin kommen können. Umso intensiver werden die gezeigten Werke diese drei an ihrer statt präsent sein. Sie dem Publikum bereits an diesem Abend, sowie über die gesamte Zeit der Ausstellung auf bestmögliche Art und Weise nahezubringen, ist ohnehin und seit jeher die grundlegende Haltung und der Anspruch an Kommunikations- und Vermittlungsarbeit von drj.
