The exhibition RÈTINA (before the brain) may be considered a hommage to photography as such. The title, the installative presentation of ten selected photographs, and a hand-made leporello edition accompanying the series, originate to Carlo Battisti [*1945, IT]. In this way, his lifelong fascination with photography, using a large-format camera is the subject matter.

With regard to content, his works also examine the subject of seeing as such, in particular the principle and analogy of the photographically created image. By taking a theoretical step before the accustomed layer of vision and perception, he surprises the recipients of his photographs in an elemental way. Visually and in terms of the motifs, subtle references to his various other, far-reaching artistic fields of interest are evident.

In addition, the exhibition exemplifies the position of photography within the concept-based field of the dr.julius programme: ten additional works by artists whose artistic focus is generally centred on different media and techniques, accentuate this in the second part of the show. A common thread among all selected participants is their appreciation and usage of the creative capabilities of photography, particularly for complementary, experimental approaches. Photography often facilitates the enhancement of personal perspectives or the exploration of new ideas within the artistic discourse; consequently, the inspiration for certain groups of works or thematic areas may often be traced back to the artist’s initial engagement with their self-created photographic images.

Die Ausstellung RÈTINA (before the brain) kann als eine Hommage an die Fotografie als solche gelten. Der Titel, die installative Präsentation von zehn ausgesuchten Fotografien sowie die zugehörige Edition eines handgefertigten Leporellos der Serie gehen zurück auf Carlo Battisti [*1945, IT]. Er macht darüber seine lebenslange Faszination für die Fotografie mit einer Großformat-Fachkamera zum Thema. 

Inhaltlich wird über seine Arbeiten zudem das Sehen als solches behandelt, insbesondere das Prinzip und die Analogie zum fotografisch erzeugten Bild. Durch einen gedanklichen Schritt vor die gewohnte Ebene von Sicht und Wahrnehmung überrascht er auf grundlegende Art und Weise die Betrachter:innen seiner Fotografien. Bildlich und motivisch zeigen sich darin subtile Bezüge zu seinen vielen anderen, weitreichenden künstlerischen Interessensfeldern.  

Darüber hinaus schlägt die Ausstellung exemplarisch den Bogen hin zur Stellung des Fotografischen auf dem konzeptbasierten Feld des dr.julius-Programms: Zehn weitere Werke von Künstler:innen, die ihren künstlerischen Fokus zumeist in anderen Medien und Techniken haben, akzentuieren dies im zweiten Teil der Schau. Gemeinsam ist allen ausgewählten Teilnehmenden, dass sie die kreativen Möglichkeiten der Fotografie schätzen und nutzen, insbesondere auch für ergänzende, experimentelle Ansätze. Persönliche Perspektiven zu erweitern oder neue Ideen der künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung zu entwickeln, wird oft durch Fotografie unterstützt; und so finden manche Werkgruppen oder Themen ihren Ausgangspunkt über die Arbeit mit dem selbst aufgenommenen, fotografischen Bild.
